Can I try a class before I sign up?
Yes you can. All prospective students are entitled to one free class before they have to pay dues.
When is a good day to come by for a trial class?
All classes are equally suitable for prospective members to try out. Because of the rotating curriculum schedule, new material is covered every 10 days, and one week isn’t better or worse than other, just different.
What should I wear to my trial class?
Typical work-out clothes is suitable for your trial class. If you have workout pants (as opposed to shorts) those are preferred. Also, a non-black shirt is preferable, as black shirts are typically only worn by black belts. If you own a cup and/or mouthpiece, please wear those, but they are not required.
I have had no prior experience in the martial arts. Will I be comfortable in your class?
Prior experience isn't required or expected in any class. All classes are taught at a level suitable to the people participating. If there are various skill levels present, then the class is divided as needed and the different groups work different drills.
I already have prior experience in another martial arts system, how will I be treated?
We firmly believe that all knowledge has value. Many students here enter with prior experience, and all such students are encouraged to use their past knowledge. In some cases, students help teach specific drills with instructor oversight, using their expertise to enrich the class. However, while all prior experience is acknowledged and utilized in class, cross-ranking is strictly against WHKD and school policy.
A lot of martial arts schools have contracts. If I sign up and change my mind, what is your contract like, and how can I get out of it?
We are against standard contracts seen in most martial arts schools. Payments are processed on the 10th of the month and if you decide to take a break from training, notify us in writing before then and you won’t be billed.
What other fees are there besides tuition?
Besides tuition, each student is expected to purchase a Redbook (which is our curriculum binder) and a complete uniform (t-shirt plus pants) before testing. A mouthpiece and cup (if male) are also expected to be purchased shortly after joining. Finally, each test has a fee that goes to the school and (if adult) a testing and membership fee that goes to the Wun Hop Kuen Do International Association. Costs vary so contact us for exact numbers.
